Carson City— Governor Jim Gibbons announced today that he has named Ikram Khan, M.D. as an advisor on healthcare issues.  Dr. Khan will advise the Governor on healthcare policy and issues concerning healthcare providers, purchasers of healthcare, consumers, and health insurers. 

Nevada has consistently ranked as one of the top 10 states with the highest percentage of working adults without health insurance.

Governor Gibbons remains concerned that escalating health insurance premiums will continue to force employers, particularly small businesses, to limit health coverage for employees.  “All Nevadans deserve access to affordable healthcare.  Rising costs will limit many employers and employees from obtaining necessary coverage, resulting in an overwhelming number of employed but uninsured Nevadans,” said Governor Gibbons.

Dr. Khan has over 25 years of exceptional leadership in the area of healthcare policy and strategy, both in the private and public sectors, and has served on several prestigious boards, commissions, and committees throughout the state of Nevada.

“Dr. Khan’s experience will be essential to my administration and I look forward to working with him to explore creative solutions that will increase the availability of healthcare for all Nevadans,” Governor Gibbons added.

Most recently, he was appointed by Governor Gibbons to the Nevada Academy of Health for the State of Nevada.  In December of 2006, he was appointed by Governor Guinn to the Academy of Heath Steering Committee.  That same year, he became a member of the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents Ad Hoc Health and Sciences Center Committee.

Dr. Khan was nominated by the President of United States, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, to serve as a member of the Board of Regents for the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences- an advisory board to the U.S. Secretary of Defense.

He also received the U.S. Presidential Recognition for “Steadfast devotion to the health and well being of patients” and helping to “promote the highest standards in Practice of Medicine.”

“It will be an honor and a pleasure to serve as the Governor’s special advisor on healthcare.  For many years, I have witnessed the challenges created by unaffordable healthcare coverage, which has left many Nevadans in dire need of services they simply cannot afford.  I am committed to working with Governor Gibbons to develop creative and sound solutions that will help provide greater access to vital healthcare coverage for all Nevadans,” said Dr. Khan.
