TRANSPORTATION BILL PASSES LEGISLATURE
LEGISLATION HEADED TO GOVERNOR’S DESK FOR SIGNATURE

Carson City – Governor Jim Gibbons today hailed the passage of Assembly Bill 595, which provides close to 1 billion dollars in funding for critically needed transportation projects without raising taxes.

“This is a win for Nevada.  We have found a way to alleviate the transportation crisis without burdening Nevada’s hardworking taxpayers.  As I have consistently stated, growth should pay for growth, and we have done that here today,” said Governor Gibbons.

Governor Gibbons proposed his transportation plan on May 10th and invited others to come forward with additional ideas on how to address the state’s transportation funding needs without raising taxes. This compromise bill includes ideas from a number of parties.

Specifically, this bill includes a $20 million yearly commitment by the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority (LVCVA), a diversion of a small part of the existing car rental tax, and a re-allocation of 3 cents of property tax revenue earmarked for capital projects in Washoe and Clark Counties.  Nearly $1 billion will be bonded for the most critically needed transportation projects.

“This is the result of hard work and compromise by many legislators of both political parties and by many interested organizations, and I commend each and every one of them for their commitment to finding a solution that would accomplish our goals without raising taxes,” Gibbons added.
