WHEREAS, the United States of America has the world’s finest Navy with the ability to project power across the sea and ashore by virtue of its surface and subsurface forces, carrier air power, and special warfare teams; and

WHEREAS, the freedom and security that the citizens of the United States enjoy today are a direct result of the continued vigilance of the United States Navy throughout the history of our great nation; and

WHEREAS, Reno and Nevada have had a long history of association with the United States Navy with the World War II Cruiser, USS RENO (CL-96) and two commissioned vessels named after the state of Nevada including the current namesake USS NEVADA (SSBN 733); and

WHEREAS, Reno is one of 21 cities in the United States that has been designated to host a Navy Week in 2009, thus celebrating the past, present and future of Reno and Nevada’s long standing support and close relationship with our nation’s Navy;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JIM GIBBONS, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim September 14 – 20, 2009 as
 

NAVY WEEK

 

All citizens are encouraged to join in a salute to the Naval Forces of the United States in recognition of their years of effective and dedicated service to our country
